They do sound similar. 'Rarely' has more of a sound like you are trying to say 'air'.

I was about to say the same thing. Put an R sound on the front of "air" instead of "eel".
(I said "air" + "rarely" first on my recording, and then "really")

The middle is different (both start with hard “R” & end with “EE” sound)
The difference is
Really is R’EEL-EE
Rarely is R’AIR-LEE
