Contexts/Examples:
1. I am curious, what do you do for a living.
2. A: So what will you be doing after this?
B: Why are you asking?
A: Nothing. Just curious.
3. Out of curiosity, She tried going through his phone just to be sure he isn't cheating on her.
4. I have been becoming too curious these days. I wonder what is happening.

Okay, let's just say 'i just want to know' and leave out the 'something'. It is cool that way, right?

Yes, that's going to work in most cases I think.
Another thought I had is that it is about being interested in knowing, not needing to know.
'I am curious about your favourite food' (you don't have to have this information, you just want it)

'I need to know if you have food allergies'. (Curiosity is not enough here, if you are going to be cooking for them.)
