Can you please help me interpret the role that the particle "down" is playing in some phrases? (details down below)

So I will break it down into two items:
1) I don't understand the nuance this particle is adding in phrases like "all the way down." I mean, I already know what "all the way" means, so why would you add "down" here? Maybe it's related to something like "until the end"? If so, wouldn't it be repetitive? (saying "all the way" and "down" at the same time)
2) Another phrase that I'm struggling with is "pass X down from generation to generation." So again, is "down" playing the role of the "future" or something like that? Do you see any difference between using and omitting "down" in this particular phrase?
