You can use 'efforts' instead of 'effort' when you want:
1. to refer to an attempt that was repeated several times to achieve something.
e.g. I make sporadic efforts to sort out my files.
2. to emphasise that two or more different actions were taken to achieve something
e.g. In efforts to lose weight, I cut down on fatty foods AND took up running.
