tolerating something means that even if you dislike something, you will "tolerate" it, or let it happen even though you dislike it. Eg. I will tolerate it because you like it. Whereas getting off the hook would be stopping someone from getting into trouble. Eg. Someone got into trouble with a teacher (one time thing) I will let you off the hook this one time. This is because this is not a reicurring act. Tolerating is for something that lasts a long time or is reoccurring, whereas letting off the hook is a one-off, or something that happens very rarely
