For instance and For example can be used formally or informally, they both generally have the same meaning.
However, For Instance is usually used to describe possible circumstances
"I would like to see a better world. For instance, what would happen if everyone cared about each other?"
while
For example is used to give more details
"Children should wear colorful shirts. For example, red, blue, or green."

I myself use For Instance when writing essays, but if I am writing a really long essay, I use both to change it up! :)
