@Bunch It is funny because while they are literally opposite in meaning, they actually would have nearly the same meaning to the listener.
When you say "I can only imagine..." it means that you have not experienced what the person went through, but you can imagine the situation and it would cause strong emotion.
When you say "I can't imagine..." you are saying that not only have you not experienced it, you cannot even imagine the emotion the person is feeling. In this case, you probably do actually understand the emotion or situation the person is trying to convey to some degree (otherwise you would not be able to empathize enough to make the statement) so you are "lying" for dramatic effect but are admitting that the situation/emotion is very extreme or impactful to the other person. (I put lying in quotes because this sort of mistruth almost certainly will not be seen as negative by the other person.)
In either case, you are essentially saying that you understand the situation or emotion they are experiencing is very intense.

@Bunch i can only imagine what you’re going through means that they understand you and i can’t imagine what you’re going through means that what you’re going through is hard or tough so you know they can’t imagine how tough it must be or what you’re facing in your life
