Some critics regarded The Old Man and the Sea is influenced by the Bible. They say the old man represents Christ. Niebuhr suggests there is another way to read this novel by defining the role of the old man as Adam after the fall. 聼起來自然嗎?

Interesting paragraph. I once owned a CD of Donald Sutherland (the actor-not sure I spelled his name right) reading The Old Man and the Sea. His voice and that story was a brilliant combination.

I never thought about the Christian influence. People during Hemingway's time...whether direct or indirect, the Christian influence was unavoidable. That is, for American and European writers at least.
In the story the boy did lay down his life for the old man. It's a beautiful story.
