They're synonyms. However, I believe "start" can take a direct object whereas it sounds off with "begin"
Ex. "I'm starting my homework," sounds better than "I'm beginning my homework."

Thank you all! I understand these two words can be used in almost the same way, except that "start" can take direct object.
One more thing:
-We will begin by listening to Bach.
-We will start by listening to Bach.
I have never seen "by" used in these ways.
Is it possible to omit it?

The meaning changes a little when you remove "by." It changes the phrase after the verb from a prepositional phrase acting as an adverb to a direct object. Think about how you'd ask the question of starting.
How will we start?
We will start by listening to Bach.
What will we start (doing)?
We will start listening to Bach.
Both start and begin can be used.
