I can't figure out when to use "there is" or "there are"

I tend to make sentences like this: You will find there're mirrors almost every where.

According to prescribed grammar, "there are" refers to the existence of multiple things, while "there is" refers to a single thing. For example, "there are many dogs here", but "there is a dog here". However, from what I can gather, "there is" is commonly used in both cases in US English, especially in its contracted form: "there's many dogs here".

@benmua But it seems to me, "there's many dogs here" , that it's a grammar mistake. What about in formal occasions? Would it be appropriate to use there's+multiple things?

@iesha: You are correct, according to prescriptive grammar, but some people do say that. I, personally, don't speak that way and I don't like how it sounds, but there are those who use that structure in both informal and formal speech.
