it's an old word for zero (think it actually means "nothing")

Hardly every used except in Britain in reference to sports scores. At least I never hear anyone in the US say it, but we are all familiar with it and know what it means. We just don't use it ourselves.

In the US we would say "three to zero" or "three-nothing"
