Как правило, into по значению похоже на in, но только в предложениях, где оба означают направление.
Например: I put that thing in/into the box. То есть положил куда? в коробку.
The thing is in the box.
Тут использовать into нельзя, ибо вещь где? в коробке. Направления тут нет.
Так же существуют фразовые глаголы с into. Например:
Be into sth - увлекаться чем-либо
I'm really into music - я очень увлекаюсь музыкой.
Ну либо
Run/bump into sbd - случайно столкнуться с кем-либо.
I ran/bumped into him after I left the house. - я случайно столкнулась с ним, после того как покинула дом.
