而字意思很多，也有很多字能替代，現在通常不會單獨用，除非意思很明確。 而且 (and), ，不只.. 而且，通常有強調的意思 她(不只) 漂亮而且善良。 She is not only pretty but also kind-hearted. 大家討厭他，而且憎恨他。 Everybody not only hate him, but also detest him. 然而(but), 但是 她很好看，然而有點苯。 She is good-looking, but a little dumb. 大家討厭他，而你喜歡他。 Everybody hate him, but you like him. 而，因而，所以 他把工作搞砸(因) 而丟了飯碗。 He failed in his work, so he lost his job. 大家討厭他而欺負他。 Everybody hate him, so they bully him. 而，就 日出而作，日落而息 Literally, start to work when the sun rises, start to rest when the sun sets. 鄉下人都是日出而作，日落而息的。 People in villages live a simple life. 而已(just) ，(就)... 而已 ，(只) ... 而已 我沒吃很多，（就）偷吃一口而已。 I didn't eat much, just one bite secretly. 我為什麼欺負他？(就) 討厭他而已。 Why did I bully him?
