Maybe you are confusing this word with Spanish "embarazar", but in Portuguese these 2 words have completely different meanings. "Constranger" means "to embarrass someone, to make someone feel ashamed". It’s kinda of a "formal" word, usually we would say "deixar alguém envergonhado / com vergonha" (litterally to make someone ashamed/with shame". "Embaraçar" means "to tangle".
Ele me deixou com vergonha no meio da sala - He embarrassed me in front of the class
Ela só quer te constranger - She only wants to embarrass you.
Esse chapéu deixa meu cabelo embaraçado - This hat makes my hair tangled.
Ele embaraçou os pelos do cachorro! - He tangled the dog’s hair!

"The word "constrain" depends on situacion, but it's usually when bad things happen and someone humiliates you or you feel umconfortable with something that person says. "Embarass" (embaraçar) is more associated a shy feelings, i think, or maybe umconfortable feelings (but not in the bad way), remember this.

As the dictionary says both can have the same meaning of making somebody feel embarrassed. But "constranger" is way more used as a verb or an adjective, we normally say "embaraçar" just as an adjective like in: "Passei por um situação muito embaraçosa ontem" (I got in a very embarrassing situation yesterday) or "O jeito com que ele falou comigo, me deixou muito embaraçada" (The way he talked to me got me really embarrassed). But most people avoid the word "embaraçar" which can also mean to get something tangled, like in: " O cabelo dela ficou embaraçado" (Her hair got tangled). Once in a while, you'll hear this word when a person means to say that something or situation is embarrassing, there are other ways to use this word, but it's REALLY uncommon.
"Constranger" is what we're saying the most as a verb and as an adjective. An example: "A piada que ele contou me constrangeu" (The joke he told embarrassed me). Another one: "É sempre constrangedor cair no chão em público" (It's allways embarrassing falling on the floor in public). Most people are only using "constranger" normally, it sounds more natural... =)
