一般的に壁で区切られた空間
「室」
◯◯の部屋（場所）
例　
更衣室（服を着がえる部屋）
dressing room

地下室（地下にある部屋）
Basement room

試着室（試着をする場所）
fitting room

室温（部屋の温度）
room temperature

部屋 means room.
室（むろ） is a kind of room, it is a structure that is separated from the outside air and can control inside temperature somewhat constant.
Often it is a food storage facility.

Remember that 室 also means room when it is used with other characters.
example:
和室（わしつ） Traditional Japanese room
洋室（ようしつ） Western style room
寝室（しんしつ） Bed room

”部” means a part of something.
"屋" means house.
"部屋" a part of a house = room

”室” this one character also means a room.
But we do not use it in daily conversation. We usually use "部屋" for room.
However, we don't say "寝部屋" for the bedroom. ("寝" means sleep)
We call it "寝室".
I don't know why either.

If you use 室（reading changes to むろ）alone, it indicates special room like food storage facility.

@dajie_zuo I was reading on substack that 室 (しつ) was the old japanese word for 'room' and that it is still left over in many words due to them being compound words.

Would you ever say something like 寝の部屋?
