Are they interchangeable when using past continuous tense? E.g. She was washing the dishes while/when her parents came back home.

when - at what time/at or on which(referring to time/circumstances)

e.g when did you last see her ?

he used to played the violin when he was a boy.

while - a period of time/at the same time(meanwhile)

e.g the parents were chatting while the kids were playing

we chatted for a while

@ughlyunicorn thanks for your explaination but in this sentence could we use while instead of when : She was washing the dishes while her parents came back home.

@meishd if u want to use ‘while’ maybe u can rephrase it to “her parents reached home, while she was washing the dishes.”
