"Mother tongue" and "first language" mean the same thing.
I think "mother tongue" is an older term. I haven't heard it in a long time.
"First language" is more common now.

@koyuki_01 I disagree with the first answer.
"Mother tongue" and "first language" usually mean the same thing, but not necessarily, and not automatically.
"First language" means your strongest or best language. "Mother tongue" is your first/native language that you learnt from your parents and your home environment, as a child.
My mother tongue is English, but until I was 16, my first language was German, because I grew up and went to school in a German-speaking country.
Clearly, they are not the same thing!

First language has nothing to do with being your strongest or best language.

There are more definitions of "first language" than what's listed in the sources you've chosen to provide; it's not a particularly precise term.

@MattKaian OK, so if you believe that article (which I don't...) YOUR mother tongue is German ("The term is largely differentiated from other terms such as the “mother tongue,” as this generally refers to the language of a collective group, not of a person") and your first language is English ("The term “first language” refers to the language a person is most familiar with and most accustomed to speaking. Usually, it is the language that a person hears and eventually learns in the following years after he was born".).....
Personally I think dictionaries are to be preferred over self proclaimed expert web sites as in this article. YMMV.
In general I firmly believe them to be interchangeable terms in modern, common use, and that's what matters.

@peterf "YOUR mother tongue is German"
No, and that's not the inference being made in the article. If anything, it's saying that I would simply be called "bilingual" (basically having two first languages, I suppose). I'd have gone along with that definition when I was 16, as mentioned above, but my German is no longer as strong as my English, even though I still speak it fluently.
But yes, I acquired it in "mother tongue fashion", so in that sense, you're right.
