Can the 2nd French sentence even have a certain meaning? If it can, what would it be?

I'm now confused by my textbook's explanation on participe présente and gérondifs .

It explains the usage of participe présent as;
1. Time (while doing / after doing)
2. Cause (because)
3. Assumption/Condition (If one do)
4. Opposition (even though / nevertheless)

and the usage of gérondif as;
1. Concurrency (while doing)
2. Means (by doing)
3. Assumption/Condition (If one do)
4. Opposition (even though / nevertheless)

and explains Means is the usage gérondif has but patinoire présent doesn't.
