有關 英語 (英國) 的問題
"The two sides were no closer to a final agreement at midnight than they were at noon."
Can you please explain "than" in this sentence? I know you can compare 2 objects using "than", for example "this apple is bigger than that apple" but I don't understand it in this context...
(this question is for my Japanese friend and I'm finding it difficult to explain even as a native speaker of English... any help would be appreciated!)

It's comparing the two states eg
After putting on a coat I was warmer THAN I was 10 minutes ago.
You have two states here, how warm you were before putting on a coat and how warm you were after.
These are basically saying that the two sentences are connected. In my example we have improved the situation and we are warmer THAN we were previously. In your example the people have not made any more progress THAN they had hours ago.

A and B are friends. They meet at 1pm.
A and B want to go to dinner at 5pm. They have to decide where they want to go.
A wants to go to a Chinese restaurant. B wants to go to an Italian restaurant.
They talk and talk for 2 hours but can't decide.
A and B are no closer to deciding at 3pm than at 1pm. In other words, they have made no progress.
