Neither of them means barren.
Wilderness = wild, uncultivated, uninhabited by people.
(A remote forest could be wilderness.)
"In the wild" = not in captivity, or not domesticated
"In the wilderness" = in a remote wild place

Either wilderness or wild would be OK.
Wilderness would be used for more remote wild places.

Thank you Igirisujin! If I may ask, I want to use either of them for "natural settings" such as a forest, but do they both mean "barren"?
