There isn't one. These words have the exact same meaning. Afraid sounds a bit more formal, and is used more in books and poems, while scared is used more often when spoken. Scared is also used by children much more than adults, so older children and teenagers will use it to make fun of other people. For example: "Oh is Tommy scared?" while using a taunting voice. :) I hope that wasn't too confusing! (I'm not great at explaining)

Actually, Your answer is great! However, I don't know why did you say ''There isn't one'' at the beginning. Do you mean There isn't one difference or There isn't one sentence of which I listed can use SCARE?
