For example:
'A customer is looking for the drinks section in the store. Can you help them?'
'A consumer has complained on the phone that a product they bought was faulty.'
In this instance, the consumer is the person who has already bought something and the customer is someone who is just looking. Sometimes consumers can be referred to as customers as they both shop at a store but either way it will most of the time be that consumers have bought the product and customers haven't.

A customer is a person who shops at the store and the word means they have not always bought a product. However, a consumer is someone who has bought products or goods and they are therefore a consumer as they have consumed the product (or bought it).

For example:
