Both work perfectly fine and are correct. However "thanks" is a lil bit less personal than "thank you", because thank you is directed strictly towards the person or people you are thanking.
Both are polite and quite frankly, have no practical difference.

"Thanks" is more laid-back, and "thank you" is more polite, probably to be said to someone formally, but overall both can be e used formally and non-formally.

"Thanks" is a more informal/casual way to say "Thank you." People tend to use "thanks" more often with friends and family and people they are comfortable with while "Thank you" is used when talking to anyone else, especially people you do not know very well.
