@mgkni I don't think I understand what you're asking. Usually I would use the phrase "set oneself up" to say when we plan something and then it backfires on us. For jokes I usually hear people use "you set that one up".
Ex.
A: "you know how there's the chicken or the egg?"
B: "yeah, what about it?"
A: "well, I found a fully grown chicken inside a kinder egg today. "
B: "haha, you really did set that one up, didn't you?"
Hope you like the joke

It's like when you go into something thinking you know what's going on, but in reality that other person purposely did something.
Ex. When your friend tells you to go to a party so you went. But when you got to the party you realize it's a birthday party. But you don't have a present for the host.
Ex. When your coworker purposely didn't tell you the deadline for an assignment so you got yelled at by your boss.

@Yatsuki Thanks a lot! I got it.
I think I once heard that after a funny reply as saying: you've made the joke easy for me... But I surely misunderstood the phrase...
Could I say: You set yourself up for that one? when a comment lead to an easy or obvious joke/reply) Does it sound fine?
