"afraid of" I think is more just fear of that something.
"afraid to" is more about being worried about the consequences.
i'm afraid to talk in front of a large audience. (because I will probably embarrass myself)
I'm afraid of talking in front of a large audience. (i have a phobia)

"afraid of" means you've feared doing that for awhile. Like a phobia.
"afraid to" isn't so long term.
However, you could use either, and the meaning is close enough to not matter.

Im not a genius in grammar but... I would like to think that you must use a noun or a verb ending in "ing" after using "afraid of" and then an unconjugated verb after "afraid to"

"afraid of" is usually followed by a noun. I'm afraid of the dark. He's afraid of bugs. Don't be afraid of ghosts. Or noun form of verbs (gerunds). he's afraid of failing math. he's afraid of dying.
"afraid to" is followed by an infinitive verb. I'm afraid to eat raw fish. He's afraid to touch the spider. You should be afraid to walk in the dark.
