Does it sound unnatural if I omit "loaves of "? Thanks in advance.

The only thing that doesn't sound very natural is the "that one boy had" at the end of this sentence. Not sure if you could omit that part but if you want to keep it, I would suggest saying something like "that a boy was carrying" or "that a boy had been carrying" but other than that it sounds very good!
