I am an university student and I would be going to United States as an exchange student next year. To be prepared for this, I need to enhance my overall English competency. Especially I am practicing speaking by picking up a movie and play it over and over until I can repeat lines by myself without captions. As I have neither a friend who speaks English as mother tongue nor money, this method seems to be the best option I can afford now. What do you think? Could you give me any advice or suggestion so that I could hone my speaking ability in any better ways?

You seem to know how to at least write English fluently. The one thing I've noticed is that you form some sentences and use some words kind of awkwardly. Otherwise, I'd say that you are pretty good. I've been trying to learn Korean and I feel like you are a lot better at English than I am at Korean-- so no complaints, your really good. From now on if you are going to the US, I would expect that you will make a lot of friends there. I am sure that you will get corrected when you make grammar mistakes as America has several "grammar polices". If you weren't so good at English, I would suggest you get a tutor, but I believe you will grow a lot in your English there even without paying for it. Just pay attention to everyday English. BTW it would be better for you to say "I am a (don't put 'an' before a word that starts with a vowel) university student and I will (would is generally used in this situation if you are unsure) be going to United States as an exchange student next year. To be prepared for this, I need to enhance my overall English competency. (especially does not fit here) I am practicing speaking by picking up a movie and playing it over and over until I can repeat lines by myself without captions. As I have neither a friend who speaks English as mother tongue nor money (ok, technically this is correct, but "I don't have a friend who speaks English as a mother tongue or money" sounds a lot more natural), this method seems to be the best option I can afford now ('at the moment' might sound better). What do you think? Could you give me any advice or suggestion so that I could hone my speaking ability in any better ways? (it might just be me but the word 'hone' sounds a bit too epic for this sentence. I would use this in a sentence like, 'I've been honing my superpowers for years', but idk, man. You sound so cool, though. It might be better to say, "improve my speaking ability in any better ways.) I learned as a person trying to learn foreign languages that it helps to always speak confidently as if you know you are good, but be able to take correction--lots of it. It's a process everyone has to go through. Just immerse yourself in English and you will pick up the rules pretty fast. :)

I think movies and media in general are great ways to learn a language! Try making more friends to be able to speak to so you will be comfortable speaking the language.

Thank you for your advice. I found that both of you have recommended me to make a native friend. The thing is I am not used to listening to and understanding the people speaking in the real world. They are totally different from the tests such as TOEFL, TOEIC etc. So I guess I need to spend some time to adjust myself to real people's speaking with the aid of media before I take action of making an actual friend. Would it work?

You may not need many friends as long as you practice speaking aloud. I find listening to movies with subtitles and even watching lyric videos are helpful. Being able to read along while listening to something is helpful. Making friends might be a challenge but you can do it!

Giving away personal information is a bit uncomfortable. Don't feel pressured to give it away or anything but good luck with your studies!

@funnybunny I think your advise is very practical. I guess I need a "grammar police" right here in Korea and that is the conclusion all of you said in common.

@funnybunny And also thank you very much for your correction on my question itself. That was really helpful.
