there really isn't one, both usually refer to the language you learned first. Native language is sometimes used to refer to the language spoken in your country of origin. for example: if you were born in Japan and your whole family speaks Japanese, but you really only speak English, some people might refer to Japanese as your "native language"

There is no difference. native means its your mother tongue, that is the first language you learned how to speak.

I think there isn't much difference since native is basically your first language, even tho it depends since for example you could have parents who speak different languages so in that case it's different

I'm asking this because my American friend who is of mixed race once told me that his native language was actually Vietnamese (his mother is pure Vietnamese). I think I get it now.
Thank you guys for clearing it up. :)

Actually.. The two word has clear difference that relates closely to one another. For example, my sister is born in Vietnam, her first language is Vietnamese. She soon moved to America by age 5, being a Dec. child.Yet her native language is English. This is correct because she expresses and think in English. Her mind speaks in English. She identify herself with the English language.
First language is a mother's tongue.
A kid before five could speak in any language, and it will be their first.
But the language that the child later learns to express themselves is their native language.
Native deals with your instincts. What comes natural.
Now she is learning Vietnamese. It not her native language but a language in her mother's tongue.
