I was told from a native English speaker that
"You usually don't start a sentence with a conjunction in English (and, or, but, etc)."
So what do you usually use instead of these?

You're not supposed to start sentences with those conjunctions, though you'll find that informally we'll still do it.
What replacement you want depends on the context, but here are some examples:
And -> additionally, also
Or -> otherwise, instead, alternatively
But -> however

Spoken English? We do it all the time, but people may not realize it.
This type of conversation happens all the time:
A: What do you want to do?
B: Let's watch TV... Or maybe go to a movie!
That long pause between the two suggestions essentially starts a new sentence.
Written English? We do it all the time.

@mochitora What will sound strange to a native speaker is repetition. It doesn't matter what the word is. If you use the same word over and over again, or if you repeat the same sentence structure, it will sound off.
Regarding starting sentences with a conjunction, there was a time when teachers said not to do this. I learned not to do it. It is, however, only a style choice, and hasn't been taught that way for a while.
