So when using the word "interesting" there's more emphasis on the topic that you're talking about, whereas if you use "interested" it puts more emphasis on the person that is interested, since you're describing how they feel about something.

Something that is interesting might be exciting or intriguing but being interested is the act of being intrigued or excited by something. example: "My mom thought that news broadcast was really interesting." compared to: "My mom was really interested in that news broadcast." being interested is more associated with the action, but "interesting" is used to put emphasis on the topic that is interesting.
