At times they're interchangeable (can be switched without significantly changing the intended meaning) but "to" refers to the direction or identifies the subject affected while for can be used more to express the purpose of something.
Examples: we traveled north to south.
I went to the beach.
I studied for the test.
I wrapped my Christmas present for Sarah.
