I mean, imagine, you are talking to a friend and he tells you the storyline about a film. But before he told you about the storyline, you have asked him something like what the story is. And I want to know how I can ask my friend such question. Would this be right "What was the storyline/plot?" "What is the film about?" ?

Try asking, "What is the film about?" or "What is the plot of the film?" Both sounds fine.
