Wife: I thought the plan was to take care of the boy until his mom got better?

Husband: There was never a timeline for that.


Does the husband mean that they didn't expect the boy's mother would get better?

Probably not. Most likely it means that the husband believed that it might be possible that they (or someone else) might still have to take care of the boy even after his mom did actually get better. It implies that maybe the boy will be staying with them (or someone else) for a while.

Actually, "timeline" is probably correct. It is a fairly common term in American English. It comes from the business world, but it is used in a variety of settings. If you ask "What is the timeline for that?", you are asking how long it will take to get the job or the task done.

"Time limit" actually is something a bit different. If you ask "What is the time limit for that?", you are wanting to know when the task or job will be done.

Or better, for "time limit", when the job needs to be done. A time limit is about a restriction.
