There's not much of a difference, I'd say that scared means a little bit more than afraid though.

They mean the same thing! You can use either one to describe something that scares you:
"I'm afraid of clowns." = "I'm scared of clowns."
Though, "I'm afraid" can also be used in a formal situation to give bad news to someone. For example, if you work at a restaurant and you run out of beef, you could tell your customers: "I'm afraid that we don't have beef right now." or "We don't have beef right now, I'm afraid." :)
