2. Wax and Wane are names for the moon cycle. When the moon is getting bigger and bigger each night, this is waxing. When it gets smaller each night, this is called waning. :)
3. This is an expression that means: the researchers are enthusiastic.
4. This is a passage about scientists being possibly close to making a machine that can think on its own.

@Journey667: Sorry. I still can't understand 'far into space'. I guess 'deep' is an adjective here, but I just can't get what it means here. Does it mean the vessel is big and heavy?

Deep is describing "space." It basically means that the vessel is going far away from earth into space, thus: deep space

@Journey667: Thanks. 'Hal 2000 of 2001 A Space Odyssey runs a deep space exploration vessel while simultaneously trying to kill its astronaut crew.' I guess the subject, verb, and object are 'Hal 2000 runs a vessel' , but now I'm confused about this. Could you tell me what the role 'deep space exploration' plays here? Like an adjective?

Honestly, this part confused me a bit too, I think "Hal of 2000 of 2001" is all a noun. I wouldn't worry about that, it seems incorrect. :)

@Journey667: '2001 A Space Odyssey' is a movie, and these words are italic in the text, sorry make you confused about this.

Ah, in this case, hal 2000 is in "2001 A Space Odyssey"( I think that is a movie), and Hal is the vessel that is going far from earth, or: deep space.

@Journey667: Thank you so much! I could get what you mean now. Since Hal itself is the vessel here, what does 'run' mean here? Does it mean Hal itself is running(operating), or it play a part of vessel?

Hal would be doing the operation. (Running the operation)

@Journey667: Thanks. Take English testing exam in Gaokao(the final examination from high school to college), I have got 130/150. However, I can't speak fluently as well as write well. My reading skill is relatively good compared with listening/speaking/writing skills. What I really want to do is improve my English skills rather than only getting a higher score in Chinese English testing. And I can't get what you mean 'I would update this on your account', do you mean I need change the level bar and upgrade it? I think this is one of reasons that I need learn English everyday.
