...Here is the context of that,
When I studied we had some exercises and then tests and exams when we had to reproduce a melody that we were listening to. The materials were from simple musical phrases to quite complex sections. It is so called musical dictation because we did it without actual musical text. (however we call it dictation)
Though the purpose itself was just some training since in most cases there are available musical texts nowadays.

@Vicka: 'When I studied, we had exercises, tests, and exams where we had to transcribe a melody while listening to it. They ranged from simple phrases to complex sections of music. It's called musical dictation because we had to listen and transcribe simultaneously.
The reasoning behind this exercise was ear training, because nowadays most music is already transcribed.'
