l think that you can use did to emphasize a question when, 'What, plus a verb' is the subject of the sentence. For example....What caused the accident ? If it is not clear what another person is telling you, you could say: What exactly did cause the accident ? However, I stand to be corrected eventually. What happened to you this morning? What happened to you yesterday, last week, etc. What has happened to you, is something that you can see immediately, and you use this tense ( Present perfect ) for something that started in the past and continues in the present....e.g. What has happened to you since you came back from Italy ? You just haven't been the same since then. This is a reply to the person who posted the question...Alvin 11 from Spain. 😊 Actually, what l wrote about 'What happened to you' and 'What has happened to you'...was to do with the fact that Englishpuppy had pointed out that in fact they are different in use.

@Ellie124 but it gramatically isn't correct? 'what did happen to you' I put the auxiliar verb 'did' and I put 'happen' in infinitive because 'did' become the answer in past. What do you think? :)

@Aivan11 To be honest I use either of what I put down . If you would only like to use the one what is correct , you can . I was just giving you another one. They do mean two different meanings though .

@Aivan11. You can also say: so, what did happen to you, when you want to emphasize something, and in this case, did can be used.
