It's a way to make it more colloquial, and to make the rhythm better. There's no real difference in meaning.

@deepak: The "down" isn't necessary to convey the meaning of the sentence. It's used in the same way that people say they are traveling "down the road". The down is used to convey the distance between the area being described and the area the conversation is taking place.

in this context, Down is used to reference distance/location. For example, if you are talking about a place that is SOUTH of your location you say down there. If a place is NORTH of your location you say up there.

@Dashawn I don't think that's always the case. I say "I'm going down to the lake," despite it being two and a half hours north of where I live, and I say, "Up to PA" when I'm at the lake, despite it being far to the south.
