Yes that is correct. That structure is used when you’re talking about something that happened. It’s like “there was a man” but “I had a man” is personally about you.

@mouellees you’re correct- it has two meanings but in this context it has nothing to do with getting someone to do something.
I think she essentially just dropped “who”.
I had a man who did X.
