'again' →「また」、「重ねて」
'once again' →「もう一度」、「もう一回」
'Again' is to repeat at least one more time, but likely or possibly several more times if necessary. If you say 'once again', it means just one more time.

When you do something "again" you are repeating an action, when you say "once again" you are announcing you have done this action, once again can also carry a tone of frustration or sarcasm very often.
I have to go to the grocery store again, they are having a new sale tomorrow.
I have redo my report once again, it is the 8th time this month.

@arlequin27 Both are used when you've already done something at least once, though. If you're repeating something over and over, it would be much more natural to say 'again' rather than 'once again' since you would know that essentially just one more time would be likely untrue. 'Again' is used much more commonly anyways.

@meikora True, I am more used to "once again" used mainly in sarcastic sentences, is very rare to hear outside of it. At least most Spanish speakers do it this way. Your response makes more sense though.
