a friend of mine sometimes says "who is about today or tomorrow?" "is anyone about today?". I know what that means, but can anyone explain the grammar on it??

In this context "about" means "here, prepared to do things, available for action". Basically the person is asking if anyone is there or has everyone vanished somewhere else.

“about” sometimes replaces “around” or “out”, they are asking if anyone will be out/around today. For example, if you’re going to a cafe, your friend might say “is anyone about at the cafe?” they’re asking if anyone you know will be there at the cafe
