I don't understand the difference between "mean to" and "mean ~ing".
I guess "mean to" means "plan to", "be going to" or "want to", right?
I can't even guess the meaning of "mean ~ing".
Could you possibly show example sentences of these please?
Thank you.

mean to (do something) = intend
so you have an intention of doing something, you do it intentionally
as in your example "I didn't mean to hurt..." it wasn't your intention to hurt eg. someone = you did it unintentionally
mean (doing something) = involve
so as in an example "It'll mean working hard" -> you set up a goal so you have to work hard to achieve it. Another example: "I want to go out for a run every morning but it will mean waking up earlier"

@Erikajp "mean" has several meanings. 🙂
It will mean working hard
It will require hard work.
This is like 意味 - the meaning of "it" is hard work.

Mean has many meanings. You need time and practice to master them all. - --Mean=intend: I meant to call you.
--Mean= involve / lead to: Going to the university means getting a degree.

your understanding of "mean to" is correct. For example you could say "i didnt intend to(mean to) hurt you". That is the definition when used before a verb, generally. There is a second meaning when used before a pronoun, "why are you being mean to her?" in this case it has similar definition to being rude to someone or acting in a bad way to someone. The second word "meaning" is very close to definition. So "What is the meaning of the word?" is almost the same as "What is the definition of the word?". This is used in a few ways one of the common is to show anger/annoyance at a particular thing for example if a person broke you favourite cup you might say to them "what is meaning of this?".

@Igirisujin Thank you very much for telling me!
Actually, "involve" has several meanings as well, so it confused me more.
But, I understand in this case, "involve" means 2-a in the picture.
So, "mean to" means "つもり", while "mean ~ing" means "意味する or 伴う or 必要とする。" :)
教えて下さってありがとうございます!
実は、involveも意味がいくつかあって、それでさらに混乱していました。
ですが、この場合は、involveは画像の2-aの意味だとわかりました。
なので、「mean to」は「つもり」、一方「mean ~ing」は「意味する、伴う、必要とする。」という意味になると思います^^

@Erikajp Actually, I slightly disagree with "involve" in this case.
But it's very close, so don't worry about it. "Mean" does have a lot of meanings and they can be similar to each other.
In this sentence "It will mean hard work." I think "mean" is much stronger than 'involve'.
I think the sentence means "It = hard work."
"Involve" is like, 'there will be some".
But I think you understand it well. 😊

@Erikajp Ive never actually realised how unnecessarily complex english is and how many exceptions there are, and how many words are spelt the same but have 5 different meanings😂 I'm so sorry
"to mean" and "to mean to" are completely different verbs essentially using the same words. Everyone up there^ explained it well so i wont do it again but haha i completely understand your tears
