As you get older, you learn a lot more words. But right now for me, I mainly look up words while I'm reading. But other than that, most people don't look up words too frequently.
I haven't personally used a physical dictionary in years, and I instead use online ones. The ones most commonly used are dictionary.com and merriam-webster.com

I agree with karabou. As you get older, and as you read more and more texts, you pick up a lot of words. At this point, if I come across a word that I don't know, I get a sense for the meaning through context. If that fails, I'll usually turn to dictionary.com. I don't think I've seen someone use a physical dictionary for quite some time, especially since everyone has a smart phone or their laptop on them.
If I don't really need a list of all the various definitions that a word has, and just want to get a quick feel for it so that I can continue reading, I'll go to google and will type (for example) define:serendipitous and google does a pretty good job in my opinion.

Thanks all. It's great to hear your experience. I use online dictionary like merriam-webster as well for it offers a superb userful dictionary for ESL advanced learners like me.

I use the website wiktionary to check the meaning of words when I am unsure.
