if your sentence is in past tense: we elected him as the chairman of the committee.
if it's in future tense: we will elect him as the chairman of the committee.

回答@Crymson I would replace “eased” with “sat”. That way it would sound more natural. Also, you can’t use “off the chair”, only “on the chair”.
