A commoner is a person. You should use "more common" in this sentence.
"The more common a word is, the more ways there are of using it" makes more sense.

The first way is a single word. The second way is plural.

Thank you so much.
Which is natural way of saying it?
Will both be ok?

I think the first is more clear. "The more common words are..." sounds like you are about to list some common words.

I don't know when to treat a word as a singular noun and as plural noun.
Example1: Refrigerators have changed our life styles.
Example2:The more common a word is,the more ways there are of using it.
I don't know why example1 use a plural noun (Refrigerators) in the sentence and why example2 use a singular noun (a word) in the sentence.
Please give me some tips to make a distinction when you use singular words and plural words.

This is difficult to answer. Example 1 sounds a little strange, though. I'd say "the refrigerator has changed our way of life". In this sentence, you are implying the invention of the refrigerator, not just one refrigerator.

It may be because you are comparing two things in the second example.
"The faster a car is, the more expensive it is" is better than "The faster cars are, the more expensive they are" (this sounds really weird).
You could also say "Faster cars are more expensive"

Thank you very much for your understandable explanation.
I appreciate your answering me.
To be honest, english textbooks in Japan are not enough to explain when to treat a word as a singular noun and a plural noun.
But your explanation really helped!
