"I was hoping to meet your friends" is current, while "I hoped to meet your friends" is past tense.

@klhull717 Thanks. I suppose "was hoping" is past continuous, so "I was hoping to meet your friends" is past, right? am I wrong?

Yes it is past continuous.
Both sentences are technically correct depending on what you mean when you say it.
