What is 'Near Fluent'?
At first I registered here, I chose my native language.
I saw that there was another option where I could choose my 'near fluent' language.
Does anyone choose your second language which you speak it 'near fluently'?
For example, your parent(s) speak the language which you speak near fluently or you went to an international school and you are a bilingual?

"Near fluent" mean close to being fluent.
"Near fluent" means that you understand most of the everyday things said and written in the language but you still might have trouble with the more difficult parts like business language. You are able to speak that language well with another person in conversation.

Then, I can choose English as my 'near fluent' language, right?

@Sango, Hinative's use of "near fluent" is strange. Obviously a native speaker should always be fluent. Actually, the creator of HiNative isn't an English native.

I think 'near fluent' is that a person whose parent(s) speak(s) the language.
For example, assume that my family emigrated in the US, and I grew up in the country. I would speak English at school which I spent more time than staying at home. So my native language should be English. But my parents speak Japanese, so thanks to my parents, I also speak Japanese. But I don't speak it as much as English.
'Near Fluent' is in the option for the kind of people. What do you think?
However, this site is to ask something to native speakers. The option is not needed.

Except, in that case I'm not sure that I would call Japanese your "native" language, if you grew up mostly speaking English in an English-speaking country. Unless you spoke Japanese with your parents so much that you were actually "fluent", not just "near fluent". I feel like by definition of "native language", you should be fluent.
On Hinative, the option for "near-fluent" is under "native language", and that's why it's strange to me.
Maybe this is just my opinion.
