In this sentence, between following two sentences, which is the correct meaning?

1. I put my coat on because I didn't want to catch a cold
(To conclude, my intention was not to catch a cold, but whether I succeeded or not is unclear)

2. I put my coat on and thanks to this I could avoid catching a cold
